Hot stone therapy is a form of geothermal hydrotherapy – the application of both hot basalt and cold marble stones incorporated into a massage to provide the body & mind with various benefits. Thought to originally be a Hindu practice in India around 5000 years ago, warm stones were placed on the body to relieve pain and relax muscle tension. Various practices of hot stone therapy can be seen throughout history. In Modern times, hot stones are typically incorporated into a bodywork massage – the practitioner may utilise the stones as an extension of their hand, warm up tight areas before massaging or place the stones on specific areas of the body.
Here at Back2Wellbeing we feel the most effective application of hot stones is incorporated into a full body massage using Swedish and Deep tissue massage techniques. We apply luxurious warm oil to the skin, then massage all over with the stones. The heat slowly radiates into the muscles, penetrating deeper than solely the hand, inducing a calm state of relaxation. This expands blood vessels, stimulation blood flow throughout the body. This form of massage is extremely therapeutic.
